Type Locality and Naming

Along the Narvansay River, southern slope of the N. Nuratau ridge. M.N. Solovyev in 1953 (382, p. 72); 1963 (424, p. 53).

Synonym: Narvan Suite, Наранская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Biomorphic, clotted, detrital-slime, sandy, conglomeratic limestones with horizons of allochthonous, in the lower part contains subordinate layers of conglomerates, sandstones, siltstone (aleurolites), and claystones (argillites). Thickness 15-115 to 200m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The lower contact is tectonic over most of the area. In Shokhetau Fm, possibly, is connected by a continuous section with the lower Carboniferous (Bensh et al., 1999f.).

Upper contact

It is overlain with erosion and stratigraphic unconformity by the Koytash Fm with the omission of the lower zone of the Moscovian subhorizon, locally partially the upper zone of the Upper Bashkirian subhorizon.

Regional extent

North Nuratau Range, Koytashsky, Merishkorsky, Mikhin-Daristansky klippens. R.R. Usmanov et al. (1999f.) include the Naran Fm in the Kelvasay Gr.

Fossils

Lower and upper subhorizons are present. Lower Bashkirian - on the NE wing (r. Kokbuzak) and in the western part of the Koytashskaya syncline (Dumalaksay, interfluve of Narvan-Dumalaksay), g. Merishkor and in the Mikhin-Daristanskaya depression. Contains foraminifera - Asteroarchaediscus baschkiricus (Krest. et Theod.), A. subcylindricus (Kir.), Planoendothyra aljutovica Reitl., Mediocris brevisculus (Gan.), Eostaffella pseudostruvei angusta Kir., E. mutabilis Raus., Plectostaffella jakhensis Reitl., Millerella umbilicata Kir., Semistaffella variabilis Reitl., Pseudostaffella antiqua (Dutk.), P. praegorskyi Raus., Schubertella ex gr. obscura Lee et Chen, individual Staffellaeformis staffellaeformis (Kir); algae - Kamaena delicata Antr., K. lata Ivan., K. awirsi Mamet. et Raux., Donetzella sp., Beresella machaevi Kulik, B. polyramosa Kulik, Dvinella (D.) comata Chvorova, D. (D.) secunda Kulik, D. (D.) crassitheca Kulik, D. (Trinodella) varialonga Kulik. Upper Bashkirian deposits among foraminifera contain many common forms with the underlying complex (Asteroarchaediscus, Pseudostaffella, Eostaffella), appear - Ozawainella pararhomboides Man., O. aff. fragilis Saf., Profusulinella parva Lee et Chen, P. cf. oblonga Man., individual Neostaffella ex gr. ozawai (Lee et Chen), Depratina ex gr. prisca (Depr.), more frequently encountered Staffellaeformis staffellaeformis (Kir.); algae Ungdarella uralica Masl., Beresella sp., Dvinella comata Chvorova, Donezella lutugini Masl. (Bensh et al., 1999f.).


Age 

M.N. Solovyeva (424) and in the Strat. sl. (439) attributed the Fm to the Upper Bashkirian subhorizon, although in an earlier work (Solovyeva et al., 1953f.) in the layered descriptions of sections, Lower Bashkirian foraminiferal complexes are given, which was confirmed by recent studies. It belongs to the lower and upper subhorizons of the Bashkirian horizon (165).
